Holi, the festival of colors is celebrated once a year in the month of March to welcome the season of spring. The festival is celebrated on a full moon to mark the victory of good over evil and new beginnings.
It celebrates the death of the demon Holika and her brother, King Hiranyakashipu by Prahalathan, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. On the night before Holi, bonfires are lit to signify the burning of Holika and the victory of good over evil. The bonfire is meant to burn away the bad, evil, and negativity that surrounds us.
The festival is also celebrated in memory of the eternal love shared between Hindu deities Radha and Krishna. A grand celebration takes place over the course of several days, where families and loved ones gather on the streets to smear bright colored powder on each other, put up musical performances, dance, and distribute sweets.
